Zenith LaborNet honors breast cancer fighters

Zenith LaborNet of Tucker, Ga. will be recognizing October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month by donning pink “Z” shirts across the country for the month of October.

Along with making a donation to the American Cancer Society, the company will be highlighting the stories of Zenith family members and their experiences with this horrible disease.

This week, we honor the memory of Tommie Raye Murphy. Tommie was the mother of Zenith Account Manager Cathy McFalls and mother-in-law to lead man Tom McFalls.

As Cathy remembers her late mother: “Not only was Tommie a mother to four girls, she was a mother to any child in our community who was in need. She was heavily involved in Girl Scouts, The Central Dekalb Cardinals Youth Association and our school PTA. She was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 63 and was given only a 20 percent chance of survival. She was a fighter, and survived another 10 years until the cancer returned, this time to her stomach. After a short, but hard battle, Tommie passed away six weeks later.”

While no one can be sure what early detection might have changed for Tommie, we do know that breast cancer screening saves lives… The American Cancer Society recommends a clinical breast exam every three years for ages 20-39 and every year, along with a yearly mammogram at age 40. Early detection saves lives.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual campaign to promote awareness of and education about the disease that will affect 1-in-8 U.S. women and 1-in-1,000 U.S. men during the course of their lives. Breast cancer is the second most commonly-diagnosed cancer in U.S. women, second only to skin cancer. However, when breast cancer is detected early, the five-year survival rate is nearly 98 percent.
