U.S. business travel to Germany continues to climb

Results from the German National Tourist Board (GNTB), which represents and markets Germany as a destination for conferences, meetings, events and incentives, indicated international overnight stays, business travel, and meetings and events in Germany are strong and will continue to grow well into the future.

Data and models compiled by the UNWTO, the World Travel & Tourism Council, and the German Federal Statistical Office show that Germany could reach more than 121 million international overnight stays by the year 2030. The highest increases from overseas markets are expected from the U.S. (1.9 million), the Arab Gulf States (2 million) and China (3.2 million).

In 2014 alone, Germany reported a new record high in international overnight stays of 75.6 million. The U.S., which remains the biggest overseas market for Germany, continued to build at a good pace with nearly 246,000 more overnight stays from America out of a total U.S. volume of 5.2 million in 2014. The Arab Gulf States and China also came in strong with 1.9 million and more than 2 million total overnight stays in 2014 respectively, according to the German Federal Statistical Office.

In sync with this, a 4.6 percent rise in total arrivals for 2014 places Germany ahead of comparable growth rates for Europe, which the UNWTO puts at 3.9 percent. It also places German arrival growth closely in step with global growth rates of 4.7 percent last year.

Germany is leading Euro business destination
The GNTB and the German Convention Bureau (GCB) also announced that Germany is the No. 1 destination for business trips by Europeans with a total of 12.4 million professionals visits in 2014, according to GNTB / IPK International and World Travel Monitor.

“In 2014 Europeans made 6.9 million business trips to tradeshows, meetings, incentives, conferences and events in Germany; this represents a 56 percent share of all business trips and also a slight increase (1 percent) from the previous year,” explained Petra Hedorfer, chair of the executive board, GNTB. “There was also an increase of 5 percent in the amount of European business travel to conferences and conventions – with 3.7 million trips in 2014.”

By way of comparison European business trips to Germany equaled 2.3 million in 2009.

Matthias Schultze, Managing Director of the GCB, commented on the current and projected travel growth areas.

“We are pleased to see that the number of business trips, meetings and events, and overnight stays in Germany are continuing to rise year on year,” said Schultze. “Germany delivers excellent infrastructure and good value for the money. Meeting and event organizers and delegates can also leverage the extensive industry expertise that many German cities and regions possess in leading areas of innovation — from urban design, technology, and pharma and biotech … to mobility and automotive, green technology, finance, and aerospace.”
