Sarawak underscores Malaysia business events in China

As part of an international branding strategy, Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) participated in a Business Events Roadshow to China organized by the Malaysian Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) from Nov. 28 to Dec. 8.

The roadshow aimed to market and promote Malaysia as Asia’s business events hub — with a feature on destinations, such as Penang, Langkawi, Kuala Lumpur, Sabah and Sarawak.

The Sarawak delegation was represented Donny Tan and Jason Tan, both business development managers of SCB alongside the Malaysian delegation represented by MyCEB and other industry players from Sabah, Langkawi and Kuala Lumpur to name a few.

“Our main purpose of participating in the roadshow was to strengthen our marketing and promotional efforts toward recovery of the business events and tourism industry. We also made sure to touch base with our existing key contacts in China as well as establish new ones to expand our network of potential conference hosts and partners from China; to let them know that SCB is ever ready to provide support and assistance for their conference and meeting need,” Mike Cannon, managing director, SCB.

The roadshow began in Guangzhou, China, moving on to Chengdu, Beijing and finally Shanghai. Aside from a destination presentation on Sarawak, SCB created a special package for the China market that includes welcome banners, pillow gifts, live band performances and a themed dinner showcasing an array of local Sarawak and Malaysian cuisine, among others.

Guests at these presentations also had the chance to win prizes from Borneo in a lucky draw and meet Brooke, SCB’s traveling orangutan and latest Sarawak superstar.

“Overall, the roadshow was a success in connecting with the local industry in China and to also reintroduce Sarawak’s capability and past successes of hosting international conferences and corporate meetings. The response was encouraging, and we expect the momentum to carry on through to 2015,” stated Donny Tan.

“The roadshow was a great initiative by MyCEB to gather the local industry and work together as a team in rebuilding Malaysia’s image as a business events destination. Our aim with the presentation on Sarawak was to inspire potential clients from China to venture to Sarawak and unfold a new chapter in their business adventure. We look forward to welcoming them to Sarawak in 2015,” commented Jason Tan.
