San Diego Convention Center Corp. board elects 2015 members

The board of directors for San Diego Convention Center Corp., which manages and operates the 2.6 million square-foot waterfront facility, announced new appointees for January 2015.

Stephen P. Cushman

A fourth generation San Diegan, Stephen P. Cushman will serve as chair. Cushman is an experienced businessman and committed civic leader. Throughout his career, he has been actively involved with numerous boards and commissions.

He established The Cush Automotive Group and was a recognized leader in the automotive sales industry before its sale in 2006. He was named Mr. San Diego 2013 by the San Diego Rotary Club for his dedication to the betterment of San Diego. In 2001, he received recognition from the San Diego Convention and Visitors’ Bureau for Extraordinary Leadership and Support of the Tourism Industry in San Diego.

In addition to being an adjunct professor at San Diego State University, he is the past chairman of the Business School. He is special assistant to Mayor Kevin Faulconer, a trustee for the National University system and a member of the Downtown San Diego Partnership executive committee.

Rabbi Laurie Coskey

Rabbi Laurie Coskey was elected vice chair. Coskey is the executive director of the Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice (ICWJ), an organization representing clergy, churches, mosques, synagogues, faith and justice organizations in San Diego.

As a community and civil justice advocate, Coskey is chairperson of both the San Diego Community College District Trustee Advisory Board and the Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice-California.

She also serves as a member of Interfaith Worker Justice’s board of directors. The Center for American Progress recognized her as one of the 13 Progressive Faith Leaders to Watch in 2013. An expert in multi faith relationships, she is Rabbi in Residence at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral.

Candace M. Carroll

Candace M. Carroll was elected to serve as the board’s secretary treasurer. Carroll is a highly regarded appellate practitioner with more than 30 years of experience handling appeals in federal, state and bankruptcy appellate courts. Her cases have included a wide range of subjects, including contract disputes, insurance and indemnity issues, wrongful termination, intellectual property, personal injury and complex family law matters.

Carroll has taught seminars in advanced legal writing at Duke University School of Law and the University of San Diego School of Law and currently supervises a Ninth Circuit Legal Clinic at the University of San Diego School of Law.

She is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the California Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and several other circuits including the U.S. District Court for the Central and Southern Districts. In 2009, she received the Duke University School of Law’s Charles S. Rhyne Award, given to an alumnus whose career as a practicing attorney has demonstrated the highest standards of professionalism and personal integrity. She is also a board member of the San Diego Opera Association.
