People on the Move Q&A: Jeffrey Rubin, president, Testrite Visual Products

Four generations of one family have led Testrite Visual Products, a manufacturer of display hardware solutions, and they will continue to do so. The company named Jeffrey Rubin as president. He is the great grandson of company Founder Herman Neuwirth, and the younger Rubin will work with his father, Larry Rubin, who is also CEO.

Q: Did you always want to work in the family business?

I’ve always been interested in the family business. I started visiting the factory when I was 11, and I worked here as a teenager. While I didn’t return to Testrite after college, it was never far from my thoughts.

Q: How did you prepare to become president of Testrite Visual Products?

I spent a great deal of time thinking about where our greatest opportunities are, and I laid out a roadmap for myself. I also invested time with Larry Rubin, my father and the CEO, clarifying each of our roles and decision rights.

Q: What lessons did previous leaders of companies teach you?

I learned a lot in my 6.5 years as a management consultant at Bain & Company. When I announced my departure, I asked the CEO I was working with for any advice he had. He told me to listen, over index to listening over speaking in my first few weeks and months. I’ve tried to really take that advice to heart.

Q: What do you hope to achieve as president?

My number one priority right now is continuing to improve the experience for our current customers. We’re investing time and resources to improve many of our processes to deliver a more seamless and consistent experience. Ultimately, my goal is to sustain and grow this incredible business.

Q: How do you spend your free time?

I enjoy spending time with my wife and friends exploring New York City.
