Mexico’s newest meeting and convention space debuts between Tijuana and Rosarito

Officials in Baja California recently inaugurated the state’s first convention center located along the scenic highway between Tijuana and Rosarito. The approximately 300,000-square-foot convention center overlooking the Pacific Ocean can accommodate events with up to 11,500 attendees.

The Baja California Center was designed with environmental sustainability in mind.

A $45-million investment from the public and private sectors, the center was commissioned by Gov. José Guadalupe Osuna Millan in 2008. The recent inaugural event marked the completion of the facility’s first phase, which includes a 194,000-square-foot exhibition hall and a 43,000-square-foot lobby. The contemporary facility sustainably was designed to harmonize the space’s natural landscapes and includes 27,000 square-feet of gardens and open space. Two future expansion phases are planned, which will build out the center to approximately one million square feet.

“We expect the Baja California Center to greatly benefit the region’s economic and touristic growth, and boost Mexico’s image as a corporate destination,” said Juan Tintos Funcke, state tourism secretary. “Not only will it bring large corporate events and conventions to the area, but it will be an economic driver with more attractions and restaurants expected to open near the center.”

The facility’s first event, Mexico’s National Olympic from April 24-May 31, is expected to attract more than 20,000 athletes and 70,000 visitors. The venue’s 50-foot ceiling, the highest of any convention center in Mexico, makes it ideal for hosting entertainment events like boxing matches and concerts, in addition to corporate meetings and expos.

Located just south of San Diego, Baja California, Mexico, offers stunning Pacific Ocean beaches, warm waters of the Sea of Cortez, forests, mountains, deserts and bays. The state’s five municipalities, Ensenada, Mexicali, Playas de Rosarito, Tecate and Tijuana, have unparalleled landscapes of tremendous beauty. Visitors can enjoy a variety of attractions including sport fishing, bike riding, off road racing as well as exploring the missions, cave paintings and wine country, among others.
