Labelexpo Americas 2014 ends on a high note

Labelexpo Americas 2014 closed Sept. 11 in Rosemont, Ill., at Donald E. Stephens Convention Center after enjoying its most successful edition ever.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the show registered a 12 percent increase in footfall with 16,029 show visitors and achieved an 83 percent onsite rebooking rate for the 2016 event.

“Thank you to everyone, including the TLMI, all of our exhibitors and industry partners who have helped make our 25th year the best and biggest yet! The show’s success underlines just how much confidence has returned to the American label and package printing industry. People were there to do serious business, and from the feedback we’ve had, we know many exhibitors have enjoyed healthy sales as well as generating a high volume of good quality sales leads,” commented Tasha Ventimiglia, event director, Labelexpo Americas.

Featuring more than 440 exhibitors, Labelexpo Americas again played host to several hundred product launches. Highlights included new digital presses, such as HP’s WS6800 and the Cheetah from Xeikon. Other major launches included Mark Andy’s Digital Series hybrid inkjet/flexo press and Nuova Gidue’s M5 UV flexo press.

In addition, numerous new inks, ancillary products and label stocks were unveiled including new point-of-purchase and vulcanization tire label portfolios from Avery Dennison, Flint Group’s expanded EkoCure UV-LED range, Sun Chemical’s new Solaris System and UPM Raflatac’s thinner PET film label stocks.

As well as a bustling show floor, Labelexpo Americas 2014’s new feature areas were well received by show visitors. The twice-daily Package Printing Workshop sessions presented by Delta Industrial and Xeikon were well attended by label converters looking for new ways to diversify and grow their business. The interactive Smart Mart demonstrated some of the latest developments in active and intelligent labels and packaging with the newest advances in augmented reality, QR codes and scanners, RFID and NFC-enabled smart tags, temperature indicating packaging and films that prevent food spoilage all showcased.

The conference program attracted almost 1,100 delegates (the highest ever number) and consisted of 16 different sessions and 64 individual moderators, panelists and speakers. Highlights from the conference program included the CEO and converter panel discussions as well as the ‘Internet of things’ and inkjet technologies presentations.

Quotes from exhibitors and speakers:

Monica Martinez, ACOBAN: “With the presence of many Mexican converters at Labelexpo Americas, ACOBAN decided this was the year to invest in a booth. Not only does the Mexican association of label converters and narrow web have over 20 converters and suppliers, but has over 600 students studying at their technical school focused in becoming technicians and graphic designers in the flexography industry in Mexico. By having something so substantial to offer to the Mexican market, both converters and suppliers from around the world can achieve market penetration as well as synergy between companies by becoming a member of ACOBAN. Labelexpo was definitely the right place to launch the Association’s brand new APP for the iOS system.”

Joseph G. Scott, Afinia Label: “Labelexpo Americas provided a steady flow of qualified buyers who showed great interest in our exciting new lineup of label printing and finishing solutions: the DLP-2000 Digital Label Press and DLF-1000 Digital Label Finisher. We received a number of immediate purchase commitments for both of our new label finishing products. This was not surprising, since our DLP-2000 is one of the fastest and most cost-effective digital label presses on the market, and offers a complete, in-line label printing and finishing solution. Many visitors to our booth were also looking for full-color, digital, on-demand label printers.”

Darin Lyon, Anderson & Vreeland: “The response to our exhibit was overwhelming. Over the past 18 months A&V developed strategic partnerships with vital technology manufacturers, in concert with our customers, to introduce world-class solutions that will influence the future of flexography. Labelexpo Americas represented the culmination of these efforts and the level of excitement was unparalleled. Our new products and innovative technologies attracted large numbers of people to learn about expanded gamut, digital printing’s new advanced features, and how to grow their business in the future.”

Matthew Berkeley-Hill, Berkeley Machinery: “Berkeley Machinery had an excellent show with many enquiries and 21 positive leads. Visitors to our stand saw our unique service, of offering custom designs for client’s specific requirements, as a major benefit to them.”

Enrica Lodi, CARTES: “CARTES, the well-known Italian manufacturer of printing and finishing machines impressed visitors to its booth at Labelexpo Americas with its “state-of-the-art” in semi-rotary die-cutting units. This edition of Labelexpo Americas has seen CARTES close important deals/contract with companies from the American markets, which attests the efforts of CARTES in reaching and realizing customer expectations.”

Tom McNally, CAS Corporation: “Labelexpo Americas 2014 provided an excellent platform for CAS Chemical to introduce its thermal transfer ribbon product line up to the Americas and international marketplace. Our full line up of formulations including the new wash care ribbon for textile applications was well received and created exceptional interest from show attendees.”

Cindy White, Channeled Resources: “Channeled Resources launched two new product lines at Labelexpo Americas. Atlas Tapes, acquired and physically relocated this summer, made its debut in Rosemont. We knew splicing and mounting tapes were a natural fit, but we were surprised by the variety of inquiries for specialty tapes which speaks to the entrepreneurial spirit of our customers. We also introduced the first in a series of non-pressure sensitive products it will feature. Customers expect cost savings from CRG and have found that in Paper Tyger, a durable paper and lower cost alternative to Tyvek and other synthetics. Tyvek is often an over-engineered material for our customers’ applications. The energy in our booth was palpable as we surveyed current and prospective customers.”

Gary Falconbridge, Colordyne: “We were pleased with the high booth attendance Colordyne experienced at Labelexpo Americas 2014. Our visitor inquiries were the most they have been to date at a show and attendees were more eager than ever to learn about digital color printing, inkjet and laser die-cutting. Colordyne’s focus on providing continued innovation and forward-thinking high-speed full color digital printing solutions is supported by Labelexpo’s ability to provide an educational and exciting visitor experience!”

Gerald Clement, Computer Productivity Services Inc: “We were very happy with the interest expressed in our capabilities supporting multiple plant systems and our more powerful full Microsoft Dynamics GP based user and lower cost shop floor user options. As a result of valuable feedback from Labelexpo Americas attendees we now allow estimators to easily experiment with different press, tooling, material and finishing variables to quickly determine to lowest cost conversion methods for each quantity to produce.”

Jason Newville, Delta Industrial Services: “Labelexpo Americas was one of our best shows this year, we were really able to showcase our flexibility and versatility. We were impressed by the large number of qualified visitors who were planning to make purchasing decisions by the end of the year. Delta delivered two truckloads of equipment to demonstrate at this show, three unique Delta Mod-Tech solutions; digital print finishing, laser die cutting and medical converting and pouching, all were very well received. Delta also participated in the Package Printing Workshop, one of Labelexpo’s education areas, this area generated a lot of interest, attendees liked seeing Delta’s many rotary converting technologies and the way they are used in a variety of industries. Overall this was an exceptional show.”

Aaron Sanborn, DIP Company: “DIP Company exhibited at Labelexpo Americas 2014 and found it to be a very successful show. It gave us the opportunity to reach numerous new prospects, provide them with product awareness and demonstrate how our “Quick Change” pan liner systems benefit them by decreasing their changeover times, reducing water contamination and increasing overall press speed. The show generated a total of over 75 qualified leads and by exhibiting at Labelexpo Americas our sales team was able to open new dialogues with a great deal of customers and prospects at one time, thus making our company more efficient. Although the exact figure of expected sales is hard to determine, we know that having the opportunity to demonstrate our product line will definitely result in new customers and more business. Overall, Labelexpo Americas was a very positive experience for DIP Company and we will continue to exhibit there for years to come.”

Jordan Emily, Discount Labels: “As a first-time exhibitor, Discount Labels was very pleased with the quantity and quality of booth customers. Hundreds of qualified attendees stopped by to explore partnering with us for digital label solutions. Meeting one-on-one gave us the chance to listen to their unique challenges, talk through viable solutions, and showcase our innovation. The conference sessions were also valuable. It was enlightening to learn from others while solidifying our own strategic direction as a leader in the custom label converter market. Among all the new technology, we especially enjoyed being catapulted into the future of retailing with the Smart Mart and the “Internet of Things” session. The greatest Expo value, however, came from the conversations we had. In this digital age, we are appreciative of the opportunities to talk to our partners and customers in person about the future, and Labelexpo Americas provided the perfect forum to do just that.”

Scott Schultz, Eckart America: “For Eckart America, Labelexpo Americas has proven to be a great launch platform to introduce innovative ink technologies, particularly new UV products for shrink sleeves and LED applications; and this year’s event brought extraordinary attendance to our booth, creating quality connections of both new prospects and existing customers.”

Tim Zula, Esko: “Throughout the world, Esko has had very successful shows with Labelexpo for quite some time. Visitors to the booth are always very targeted and interested in label production, attendance is very strong with busy aisles, and it seems Esko always plays an active role in the conference agenda. Labelexpo Americas 2014 was no exception. We found that those who stopped by the booth were particularly interested in extended gamut—an increasingly popular topic—and Full HD Flexo, an enabling technology for expanded gamut printing.  Our design and workflow tools always garner interest, and there is always a crowd watching the Kongsberg table in action. We were, once again, pleased to participate at Labelexpo.”

Andy Hobsbawm, EVRYTHNG: “As a software platform that powers smart packaging to connect products to the Web, it was important for us to showcase our technology in Labelexpo Americas’ Smart Mart. It was great to meet label converters and brands keen to explore smart packaging opportunities to engage consumers and improve supply chains.”

John McKay, FLAG: “Did you follow the flags to the Flexo Label Advantage Group (FLAG) Labelexpo booth for buying group savings? Many did and FLAG grew its membership by more than 20 percent. FLAG is the buying group for label converters who want to reduce their costs while still remaining independent. Labelexpo Americas was a tremendous show for us this year. Our buying group concept in this market was brand new four years ago, and now converters are really starting to understand that there is great strength in numbers.”

John Bennett, FLEXcon: “Well attended by major influencers, Labelexpo Americas 2014 was a great opportunity to connect with industry experts as well as customers and prospects, many of whom made significant purchases the week of the show. FLEXcon was happy to be a part of the Inkjet Trail, providing press manufacturers with approved products, such as THERMLfilm NEXgen and DRUMcal, to help create superior labels that stand up to the challenges of the real world.”

Eric Thibault, Flexomaid: “Labelexpo Americas has served Flexomaid as a spectacular launching pad. As a new player in the Automatic Anilox roll cleaning scene, the newly founded Canadian company Flexomaid turned a lot of heads and created an enormous amount of interest during the entire show.  Numerous attendees, distributors and OEMs visited to see our new patented technology that cleans anilox and gravure cylinders using a tiny amount of detergent and water. The company also launched its Eco-Maid line of cleaning detergents developed for anilox cleaning directly at the printing press as part of Flexomaid’s line of Global Environmental Cleaning Solutions. Visitors were also very impressed by the demonstration of the first “Quality Control Test’’ on the market, which takes only 30 seconds to indicate if a roll is clean.”

Robert Waddington, Frimpeks Inc: “This year’s show provided us with over 300 well-qualified leads, almost 50 request for samples to be sent out and numerous inquiries about our products and services. We had a lot of interest in our UV flexo ink line, specialty coatings, and pressure-sensitive roll stock.”

David Haley, FUJIFILM: “FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Graphic Systems Division is pleased to announce the show-floor purchase of Graphium, by Distinct Packabilities, a Kentucky-based print provider. Graphium is a digital hybrid, four color plus white UV inkjet press integrated with inline flexo and finishing. Fujiflm and Distinct Packabilities are going to establish a new standard for digital print quality in the flexible packaging and prime label markets. We’re anxious to get Graphium into the hands of our printers and start putting these super high quality, quick turn, short run printed products out into the marketplace. Our customers continue to need these capacities and their color and graphics quality demands only continue to proliferate. We feel we now have an incredibly powerful weapon in our arsenal that will allow us to meet and exceed these demands.”

Scott Waldal, gb Flexo Equipment: “We would like to congratulate Labelexpo Americas on a terrific show.  From gb Flexo Equipment’s standpoint, you made it easy to network…  We received a lot of traffic and made some very valuable connections. This was our first year as gb Flexo Equipment and we were pleasantly surprised by how many of our previous customers stopped by looking for equipment. We received over 20 new pieces of used equipment to list from the show. Thank you.”

John Borkovec, GFI Innovations: “Although traffic was a bit lighter on the final day of the show, overall we were very pleased with the number of people that visited our booth. We met with many people who came prepared and asked good questions about how our equipment could help their business, and I’m confident that some of these discussions will generate new customers for us.”

Uffe Nielsen, Grafisk Maskinfabrik: “Classic GM units like the corecutter and sheeter proved still relevant to the market, but also new units gained a lot of interest. In particular the FB330 flatbed hot stamping unit was a showstopper, and the two finishing lines with integrated laser die cutters showed the future of finishing; both the large DC330 and the DC330 Mini “split” were very popular with the crowd. We met with several highly qualified potential partners, generated 100-plus hot sales leads, and proved to ourselves and the market that we are still at the forefront on several important parameters of the industry such as price, lead time and new technology.”

Hiroyuki Takahata, Graphtec Corporation: “We are very pleased with the outcome from Labelexpo Americas 2014. We successfully launched our new full color digital label creation system LCX1000, and enjoyed our conversations with hundreds of people who visited our booth. We have got valuable feedback and input from them, and look forward to delivering the products and solutions that make their business easier. It was very exciting to witness the growing market opportunities in label printing at this convention. We have developed so many great new business opportunities during the event and I believe market requirements for short-run, cost reduction, shorter lead time and full color will keep driving stronger needs for digital solutions in label creation which we are strongly committed to.”

Jazmin Cordero, Harper Corporation of America: “Global anilox roll supplier Harper Corporation of America celebrated huge success at the recent Labelexpo Americas 2014. Harper’s XDI graphic and printed electronics technology continue to be an eye-catching attraction and garner a lot of attention. Harper demonstrated its patented award-winning QD ink proofing system and showcased the QD Flexo Printing Head, its newest addition to the QD Multi-Process Flatbed Printing System. Also highlighted at Labelexpo was Harper’s newest HEX division, which is a partnership between Harper Corporation of America and MECA & Technology Machine, Inc. Through this division, Harper offers MECA products such as plate sleeves, bridges, mandrels, and mechanically engraved anilox rolls. These products have been designed to decrease downtime and minimize make ready.”

Richard Croft, Impression Technology Europe: “Labelexpo Americas 2014 exceeded all our expectations here at Impression Technology Europe. We found the demand for our complete short run digital solution, the Compress Range, was at the top of almost everybody’s agenda. From those looking to start from scratch, to experienced flexo printers looking for help with their short run demands, our stand was constantly busy. The interest in our newly launched Compress LF350 larger digital finishing solution was especially encouraging. In short we attended the exhibition with three pieces of digital printing equipment and returned to the UK having sold them all. The leads and contacts we have generated from this one exhibition will keep us busy for many months to come and will usher in a new chapter in the history of Impression Technology Europe.”

Wayne Middleton, Innovia Films: “Labelexpo Americas 2014 was a superb opportunity for us to connect and meet with our existing customer base and also seek new business opportunities across the region. We were able to showcase our established portfolio of label facestock films and demonstrate some of our new products such as UltraFoil and Plus Films and partnership working with converters and printers.”

Randy Rickert, iSys Label: “With every year that passes, iSys Label sees a substantial increase in the amount of patrons who are interested in the digital label printing market space. People looking for this technology seem to be more knowledgeable than in the past and are actively seeking digital label technology to fill their needs, whether it be in a print production facility or as brand owners looking to print their own labels. At Labelexpo Americas, iSys had distributors from all over the world and were very successful throughout the show with many installations happening immediately in the next couple weeks, as well as near future. The Labelexpo shows are something we look forward to all year long and we are excited to be attending the upcoming show in Brussels next fall.”

Sally-Anne Heaford, J M Heaford: “Heafords had its busiest ever Labelexpo Americas with high visitor numbers from North America and Latin America. The award winning and innovative “FTS” Narrow Web Flexo Plate Mounter, which radically simplifies and speeds up the mounting process, was being demonstrated on both our and the Agfa Pitman stand. It generated huge interest with over 200 visitors watching the demonstrations. The ease of use, repeatable accuracy and speed offers buyers the alternative to automation without the price tag. As at Labelexpo Europe last year the response to the FTS was excellent, every visitor who watched a demonstration saw the benefits instantly. The mounters on the stands were sold at the show and we are very busy responding to all the show enquiries.”

Alex Jordan, Jordan Products: “Labelexpo Americas was a great success for us, as we logged over 175 solid leads. Two separate visitors, both heads of new technology development at major converting companies, commented that our products were the most exciting new technology they had seen at the show. An industry trend revealed at the show was the growing demand for new security label technology. Converters expressed that their clients were requesting additional anti-counterfeit and tamper evident features and therefore there was a noticeable desire for new technology among converters walking the show.”

David Morris, Kocher + Beck: “Kocher + Beck was excited with the number of both existing and new customers taking time to visit us at Labelexpo Americas 2014, and with the interest shown in our full product range. We were able to take the opportunity to talk both in depth and technically with customers about our dedicated ME75 flexible die, designed especially for thin PET liner applications. MPS North America and MPS Latin America joined forces to present the added value of MPS’ flexo and offset printing presses at Labelexpo 2014. We had the pleasure to welcome a high volume of visitors to our stand. With the positive reception of our press technology and receipt of multiple orders, we achieved our goals of presenting both our high-end press technology and our strong local presence. Highlighted in the stand of MPS North America and MPS Latin America was the flagship EF multi-substrate UV and hot air flexo press, which is now available for both print sleeves and plate rolls. Additionally, MPS is a proud sponsor of Label Academy, a global training and certification program for the label and package printing industry that was unveiled at Labelexpo Americas.”

Cheryl Caudill, Multi-Plastics: “We have been a supplier to the narrow web flexographic market for over 30 years and celebrated our 35th anniversary by bringing over 30 employees from our sales, marketing, and executive teams from the US, Canada, and the UK to walk Labelexpo Americas and learn about the changes occurring in the industry. Additionally, we stayed on a few days to review what we learned and to have our sales meeting in Rosemont, Ill.  As a supplier of unsupported plastic films for ticket, tag, overlaminates, and flexible packaging, it was excellent to see how much the industry is embracing thinner plastics and flexible packaging.  These two areas have been our largest growth markets, and we are pleased the market is diversifying into areas where we have the years of expertise and the personnel ready to help them grow!”

Phil Hartley, NewPage: “NewPage Corporation (NewPage) announced the introduction of Reflections™ at Labelexpo Americas.  Reflections is a new 60 lb. Paul Teachout, Nilpeter: “Visitors in large numbers accepted Nilpeter’s invitation to “Join” the company’s display of UV-flexo presses for producing high quality labels and package printing at Labelexpo Americas. We saw visitors on our show floor really wanting to take advantage of the automation on the high-performance FB-3 and sleeve-based FA-4*. We presented a flexografic solution to meet the digital challenge and affect the cross-over point between flexo and digital. Now with a simple recall of a job and fast change of plate cylinders, the automation resets the job, and we are back in print and register with zero waste, and that is highly competitive. Another attraction was the Expanded Gamut process demonstrated on the FB-3, which produced impeccable labels and shrink sleeves. Also the FP-4 flatbed unit for hot foil and embossing on the FA-4* created much interest among premium-quality wine label converters.”

Michael J Brenner, NPPS: “FFH – Flexo For Hire and NPPS – National Printing and Packaging Services had a tremendous Labelexpo Americas 2014 show. Hundreds of show attendees who are owners and plant managers stopped to visit with us. Many of them are steady customers. The press has been fine-tuned to achieve peak performance, in terms of productivity and quality, and the show was our opportunity to prove that – with success. The live demonstrations and sample portfolios gave inspiration to label converters seeking solutions for appealing product decoration, variable data and industrial resistance. Visitors were impressed by the screen-equivalent opacity, vividness, clarity of fine text and gradient of colors achievable. We even had a few inquiries from printers specializing in non-label applications such as furniture surfaces. SPGPrints’ low-migration inks, our highlighted product introduction at Labelexpo, attracted interest from major printing houses seeking safe digitally printed food and pharmaceutical packaging solutions.”

Tony Renzi, Sun Chemical: “Sun Chemical had an overwhelmingly positive experience at Labelexpo Americas this year. The first two lines have already been sold and will be delivered over the coming months.”

John D. Pettus, Wikoff Color: “Wikoff Color Corporation appreciates everyone that came by their booth during this year’s Labelexpo Americas. Wikoff looks forward to building on the opportunities they discussed at the show and will be working diligently to follow-up with everyone that took their time to come by Wikoff’s booth.
