Events and interesting facts that have shaped the industry

Highlights from the month of July

1886
The agriculture and livestock show, La Exposición Rual; The Rural Exposition, premiered in Buenos Aires, Argentina at the Santa Fe Avenue Exhibition Centre and Fairground. It has been held there every year since.

1909
Our neighbors to the north increased Canadian tradeshow profits by more than $20,000,000 in the first quarter of the fiscal year.

1958
The first International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) was held at Hotel Statler in New York City with a registration of 122 attendees; including 70 non-members.

1999
The Washington State Convention and Trade Center in the heart of Seattle began an expansion project which doubled its exhibition space to 207,000 square feet. The project cost $71 million and expanded the convention area to 370,000 square feet.

2005
The Healthcare Convention and Exhibitors Association (HCEA) celebrated its 75th diamond anniversary in New Orleans. At the end of the event HCEA attendees and members literally danced in commemoration and merriment.

2006
Reba Pittman Walker was named CEO and general manager of the Washington Convention Center (WCC). Walker was one of the pioneer staff members of Washington’s original convention center.

2007
Exhibit City News, the nation’s only tradeshow newspaper, launched the inaugural edition of its sister publication Tradeshow Lifestyles to the world; the newspaper highlighted travel hotspots, such as dining, lodging and entertainment which would be of interest to the tradeshow community.

2008
July was a star-studded month with Russell Simmons as the keynote speaker at JCK Las Vegas and Rod Stewart performing at the grand opening of the World Market Center.

2009
Spinvox unveiled an award winning display at CTIA Wireless. It was a 20-by-20-foot creation comprised of oversized, colorful blocks, figurines and dolls. According to Exhibit City News, the adults at the show interacted with the display as though it were one big toy.
