Hurricane Sandy washes out several tradeshows

The New Jersey Shore is in shambles after Hurricane Sandy made landfall.

With the northeastern U.S. pummeled by the deadly Hurricane Sandy and transportation systems either crippled or temporarily down in parts of the nation, several tradeshows, conventions and meetings were postponed or canceled across the nation.

While not an exhaustive list, tradeshows, conventions and other events impacted by Hurricane Sandy include the annual ISC EAST 2012 security tradeshow, which was scheduled Oct. 30 and 31 at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York. The show has been postponed with no makeup dates announced. The event will not be scheduled before Nov. 12, according to the ISC EAST website.

The Advanced Energy 2012 conference also scheduled Oct. 30 and 31 at the Javits Center reportedly was canceled with no plans announced for a potential future date. The Advanced Energy website has been down due to the storm and could not be accessed as of press time. Also affected was the MediaNext show scheduled Oct. 29-31 at the Marriott Marquis in New York. The show has been postponed until Jan. 8-10.

In Atlantic City to the south of New York, instead of hosting the Marine Equipment and Supply Co. (MESCO) 2012 annual dealer tradeshow this week, the Atlantic City Convention Center was used as staging area to evacuate local families. The MESCO show was scheduled Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 but has been cancelled.

In Philadelphia, the Aesthetics Expo: International Congress of Esthetics and Spa closed a day early on Oct. 29 and did not hold events Monday as scheduled. Some of the 3,000 show attendees reportedly were stranded in Philadelphia. And in the nation’s capital, the Center for Association Leadership canceled its ASAE 2012 In Honor of Women program scheduled Oct. 31 at the Capital Hilton in Washington D.C. The District of Columbia Baptist Convention’s 136th annual meeting scheduled Oct. 29 and 30 has been postponed with a new date yet to be announced.

Even as far south as Orlando and as far west as San Francisco, tradeshows were disrupted or canceled due to weather conditions and an inability of many attendees to travel with airports closed and flights delayed in much of the nation. The Milcom Convention of Military Communications Professionals canceled its show at the Gaylord Palms Convention Center in Orlando from Oct. 20 through Nov. 1.

In San Francisco, the EDPA Roadshow scheduled Nov. 1 at the South Beach Harbor has been postponed due to a large contingent incapable of traveling from the East Coast. A rescheduled date is to be announced in about a week, according to the EDPA website.

While impossible to list all events impacted by the storm, the Global Business Travel Association estimates the storm wiped out more than $600 million in travel expenses and caused some 514,000 individual travel plans to be canceled due to Hurricane Sandy. The storm closed airports and disrupted transportation systems across 11 states situated along the storm’s path.
