E2MA first to achieve ASTM exhibitor standard

The Exhibit and Event Marketers Association (E2MA) has become the first event and conference organization to be certified to the international sustainable meeting standard for exhibitors.

The APEX/ASTM standards promote responsible environmental and social practices in the event industry. E2MA achieved Level One certification to the APEX/ASTM Standard pertaining to Exhibits, Exhibitors and Suppliers for Environmentally Sustainable Meetings, Events, Trade Shows, and Conferences (E2742-11).

The Exhibit and Event Marketers Association is a thought leader and content development organization for corporate marketers and their suppliers, who employ exhibit and event marketing.

“We are proud to take a leadership position in advancing a positive environmental and social agenda for the event industry,” said Jim Wurm, executive director, E2MA. “Being the first organization to be certified to the Exhibitor Standard is clear evidence of our commitment to our membership who can greatly benefit from certification as well.”

E2742-11 is one of nine formal, voluntary standards developed by the meetings, conventions, exhibitions and events industry to provide event planners and suppliers with specifications for producing events in a more sustainable manner. The standards were created in partnership with ASTM International, an ANSI-accredited standards development organization.

The E2742-11 Exhibitor Standard delineates the procedural requirements for planners, exhibitors and suppliers for an environmentally sustainable event. The standard specifies performance criteria for staff management, communications, waste management, energy, air quality, water, procurement and community partners.

Spearheading the development of the ASTM Sustainable Meeting Standards was the Green Meetings Industry Council (GMIC).

“This is an important moment for the sustainability movement in the event industry,” said  Connie Bergeron, executive director, GMIC. “E2MA’s adoption and certification of compliance with the Exhibitor Standard is a critical first step that will drive uptake of the standard and inspire others in the industry to follow E2MA’s lead.”

iCompli, a division of BPA Worldwide, a non-profit international auditing organization headquartered in Shelton, Conn., developed the certification protocols for the new standards and performed the independent third party certification of E2MA’s compliance with the Exhibitor Standard.
