The DoubleTree by Hilton in Portland was announced as the winner of the Green Supplier Gold Award at the International Meetings xhibition (IMEX) annual event last week. The international award recognizes environmental excellence and innovation within the meetings industry.
“It demonstrates a clear goal across the sector to drive environmental change and ensure that this remains at the forefront of all that we do,” said chairman Ray Bloom. “Awareness of environmental issues continues to take precedence today and those suppliers that have green credentials listed as a high priority gain a notable advantage over their competitors. Well done to the DoubleTree by Hilton Portland for setting an exemplary standard in this category.”
Portland, Oregon, is recognized for its leadership in sustainability initiatives. The first green Seal-certified hotel in the city, the DoubleTree by Hilton Portland was selected based on a number of impressive results, including reducing overall energy consumption 32 percent annually since 2006, investing in alternative transportation options for guests and staff to include public transit subsidies, free public bike parking and bike usage for guests.
The DoubleTree by Hilton also partnered with the City of Portland by adopting a commercial composting and comprehensive recycling program resulting in overall waste diversion of 70 percent otherwise meant for the landfill.
“Winning the Green Supplier Award is a great honor for us. Being recognized on an international level for our local sustainability programs reinforces to our staff that the innovations and efforts they make every day have impact and meaning,” said Steve Faulstick, the hotel’s general manager. “Seeing the growth in demand for sustainable business for both our customers and employees is encouraging, and we are proud to be at the forefront of providing them that culture and experience.”
