Convention center pitched for Williston

A Midwest real estate developer based in Chicago is proposing a $150 million convention center complex in Williston, N.D., complete with office, hotel and retail offerings.

The company, The Prime Group, wants local or state funds to pitch in about $35 million of that for the center that would be the heart of the entire project. Although the proposed complex still needs city approval, it would be built on a site overlooking Williston’s downtown.

With an office building on the left, a 16-story, 300-room hotel on the right, the convention center would also include underground parking for 1,500 vehicles, retail space and a restaurant. Officials with The Prime Group have mentioned a possible opening sometime in 2016.

Williston has a population of about 30,000. The Prime Group has urged the city to act quickly on the deal, in order to secure more incoming conventions and business for the once-thriving oil industry town.
