Chicago carpenters sue to block reform proposal by MPEA

mccormickblastlogoThe Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters filed a federal lawsuit on June 2 in an effort to stop a new state law that will overhaul work rules at McCormick Place, reduce costs of participation in exhibitions and make the facility more “exhibitor-friendly”.  The proposed changes would enable Chicago to aggressively compete with Sunbelt cities for exhibitions and meetings.

In the complaint, the carpenters union alleges that the law infringes on the federally protected rights of workers and private employers to resolve contracts through collective bargaining. The suit also alleges the measure goes against U.S. and Illinois Constitutions.

This is the first of several lawsuits that are expected since passage of the bill in late May.

The suit was filed against Jim Reilly, the new trustee put in place to lead the re-organization plan at Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA) facilities. It was also filed against the MPEA and state Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

“We are confident that the court will uphold the MPEA reform act,” Mr. Reilly said in a statement.
