Bowman Global Change honored with 2013 GOOD DESIGN Award

Creating an exhibit at a California-based aquarium earned Bowman Global Change and Ed Hackley Design a 2013 GOOD DESIGN Award. Drawing over 700 entries from 38 countries, the 64-year-old international award is organized annually by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design.

As part of the Aquarium of the Pacific’s Ocean Exploration initiative, the Wonders of the Deep exhibition immerses visitors in the cold, dark and largely unexplored world that exists below the ocean’s surface. This is done using wall projections, lighting, unusual animals and interactive computer displays. Highlights include a recreation of a hydrothermal vent and a whale fall where eel-like hagfish feed on the carcass of a dead whale.

Dr. Jerry R. Schubel, president and CEO, Aquarium of the Pacific explained how the design has contributed to the popularity of the new exhibit.

“The deep ocean is earth’s largest ecosystem and last frontier, one that few humans will ever see,” said Schubel. “This exhibition uses a unique blend of live animals, video displays and interactive experiences to bring that world to life.”

Tom BowmanRecognized twice with a GOOD DESIGN AWARD, Tom Bowman, president, Bowman Global Change, was awarded in 2011 as the sole winner in the individual category of the GREEN GOOD DESIGN Awards. Bowman was singled out as the individual who best met the criteria as a “leader, pioneer and innovator in green design.”

The Bowman-Hackley team has won three design awards for its engaging and interactive museum exhibitions.
