The new exhibition showcases current and emerging technologies that SCE is deploying in its effort to develop a cleaner, smarter and more reliable electric grid.

Bowman Design Group, an interdisciplinary communications design firm specializing in identity, exhibits and event marketing, has collaborated with Southern California Edison (SCE) and a team of outside vendors to create its newest educational facility, the Smart Energy Experience™.

The new exhibition showcases current and emerging technologies that SCE is deploying in its effort to develop a cleaner, smarter and more reliable electric grid. Located inside SCE’s Customer Technology Application Center (CTAC) in Irwindale, Calif, the 2,260 square foot interactive exhibit provides a new way for SCE to educate consumers and businesses about new ways to manage residential energy use and costs.

SCE selected Bowman Design Group for its project management expertise and its ability to clarify complex messages about next-generation energy efficiency and reliability. “Bowman Design Group has been a valued partner of ours for 20 years,” said Doug Campbell, CTAC manager. “It has played a big part in developing high-quality exhibits that support the experiential learning that we promote at CTAC.”

The Smart Energy Experience delivers real-time feedback on a home’s electricity use.

The Smart Energy Experience delivers real-time feedback on a home’s electricity use and demonstrates how smart grid technologies, smart meters, and networked smart appliances can work together with online tools to give customers new ways to manage their costs and carbon footprints.

Realistic architecture and outdoor elements recreate a typical Southern California home, while the exhibit’s open floor plan facilitates visits by large groups. During a thirty-minute tour, visitors learn how cutting-edge technologies can respond to peak demand on hot summer days, and minimize outages caused by events such as lightning strikes. Large-scale and rooftop renewables, such as solar panels, a solar water heater, and a home-scale wind turbine, plus a plug-in ready garage for electric vehicles are also featured.

As an immersive, themed environment, the Smart Energy Experience integrates theatrical lighting and sound with a state-of-the-art home-automation, smart appliances, and a smart meter.

In keeping with the message that energy efficiency is a cornerstone of the new green economy, sustainability is built into the exhibit.

“We specified sustainable materials whenever possible, including bamboo flooring and cabinetry, recycled glass counter tops, LED lighting, and recycled rubber flooring for the simulated street,” said Jake Huttner, Bowman Design Group’s project manager.

The Smart Energy Experience™ is open to the public. To schedule a tour, send an e-mail to CTACSCHE@sce.com.
